My first foray into model making, this project tasked me with creating a scale model of an existing building, in my case being Pilotis in a Forest by Go Hasegawa, a weekend home located three hours outside Tokyo, Japan. This was a great exercise in extrapolating a 3D model from limited floor plans and elevations. It also taught me the importance of materiality in a model, as we needed to decide what materials to use in the model to reflect real world materials. An overall nice model with some rough edges to add a little charm, this was a great jumping point for me and my future project.
This project tasked me with designing a proposal for a cafe/restaurant to be placed in a certain area within the School of Architecture at the University of Miami. I was enthralled by the majestic Banyan tree present in the middle of the site that I chose, and made it the focal point of my design. This cafe boasts well over 1500 square feet of seating space in an open concept, variable space, with large glass curtain doors that can be open or closed based on weather conditions. With a high roof that opens up to a stunning view across Lake Osceola, Sunnyside Cafe provides a one of a kind dining experience. The pictured model of this design proposal provided a fun exercise in abstraction. Whether for the sake of time or for clarity of the model, I needed to decide the most important elements of my building to translate into the model.
This project tasked me with designing and building a scale model for an art installation at the Perez Art Museum of Miami based off of the work of a famous artist. My partner and I chose to base our design off of Yayoi Kusama's work. Tapping into Kusama's surrealist painting and her famous Infinity Room installations, we created a larger than life infinity room of our own. People can enter into this large, mirrored, cube filled with colored acrylic walls. These semi-transparent walls, with voids inspired by Kusama's polka dot aesthetic, reflect over an over throughout the room, creating a truly surreal and unique experience for those entering the cube.
